What injuries can children have in a car crash?
Children suffer injuries in car collisions in Maryland every single day. This is the result of drivers in Maryland failing to follow the safety rules that are designed to keep us safe.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published a 2010 report stating that even with child safety seats, children are susceptible to injuries in a car crash.
The most common injuries to a child in a car crash are:
- Head injuries (contusions, lacerations, concussions)
- Rib fractures
- Thoracic spine injuries (upper/ mid back)
The NHTSA study reports that if a child is not properly restrained in a child seat, a child has either 3x or 8x the likelihood of incapacitating injuries compared to a child who is properly restrained in a child safety seat. To read more about this study click here.
